  Treating Asthma Caused by Exercise

Exercise is good for the heart and lungs. Children with asthma may cough or wheeze when they exercise. This can be prevented. Having asthma should not limit a child's activity.

Some Olympic athletes have asthma. They keep their asthma in good control by taking their medications and by avoiding asthma triggers.

How to prevent asthma triggered by exercise
Pre-treat with 2 puffs of albuterol (Ventolin®, Proventil®) or 2 puffs of cromolyn (Intal®) 15 to 30 minutes before starting exercise.
Have your child wear a scarf or a mask over his/her face in cold weather. Cold dry air can trigger asthma.

With proper treatment, your child should be able to participate in any sport that he or she desires. Swimming usually does not trigger asthma.
