Any child can get asthma. Some children get asthma more often:
- Children with parents who have asthma, allergies, or eczema
- Children who were born prematurely
- Children whose parents smoke (To protect your
child, don't smoke. Keep your home smoke free. For help with quitting, ask your health
care provider.)
The truth about asthma
- Asthma is not caused by the way a parent raises a child
- Asthma is not contagious (People don't "catch" asthma)
- Asthma is not an emotional illness (While strong emotions can trigger asthma
that is already present and relaxation can help in an asthma flare-up, stress did
not cause the asthma)
