  Who Gets Asthma?

Any child can get asthma. Some children get asthma more often:

  • Children with parents who have asthma, allergies, or eczema
  • Children who were born prematurely
  • Children whose parents smoke (To protect your child, don't smoke. Keep your home smoke free. For help with quitting, ask your health care provider.)

The truth about asthma

  • Asthma is not caused by the way a parent raises a child
  • Asthma is not contagious (People don't "catch" asthma)
  • Asthma is not an emotional illness (While strong emotions can trigger asthma that is already present and relaxation can help in an asthma flare-up, stress did not cause the asthma)
