Cholera is a socioeconomic disease. It's a disease
of malnourishment, poor health practices, slums and the poor, and it resides
in those communities where these conditions are found. Travelers following
the usual tourist itinerary and using standard accommodations in countries
reporting cholera are at virtually no risk of infection. In fact, the risk
of cholera to U.S. travelers (1 in 500,000 returning travelers) of any age
is so low that it is questionable whether vaccination is of benefit. Our
own Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in fact recommends against it. Always
Be Foodwise and Waterwise to protect yourself from this disease. Currently
no country or territory requires vaccination as a condition for entry, but
some local authorities may continue to require documentation of vaccination
against cholera or a letter from your physician stating that you have a
contraindication to its use. |
